Now even little tykes can have their own Hanukkah dreidel.

The instructions will walk you through the steps of adding the machine appliqued letters. Or, if you prefer hand applique, the pattern is easily adaptable to that technique.

Three fat quarters are all the fabric you need (plus stuffing and iron-on fusible web for the appliques.)

Final size: 4″x4″x5 1/4″

The four Hebrew letters on the sides of the dreidel –nun, gimmel, hey, and shin– are the first letters in the words “Nes gadol hayah sham,” a phrase which means “A great miracle happened there.” The saying refers to the Hanukkah miracle that enabled one day’s worth of oil to last for eight nights to light the menorah in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.

In Israel, the phrase becomes “A great miracle happened here.” In Hebrew, that’s “Nes gadol hayah pey,” and the letter shin is replaced with the letter pey. So this pattern also includes the letter pey, for dreidels destined for Israel.
