Wedding Chuppah Fabric to Cut and Sew Your Own Canopy

Cut and Sew Chuppah Canopy Fabric - I Am My Beloved's

Couples who want to create a wedding chuppah with a personal touch have a new option: chuppah fabric featuring designs based on classic Jewish motifs that can be used to create their own chuppah canopies.

These new cut and sew chuppah fabrics can be made into canopies from 5.5’ to 6’ square—or even a little larger depending on the technique you use to finish the edges.

The canopies are suitable for free standing chuppah frames as well as handheld chuppah poles.

I’ve been thinking about designing cut and sew chuppah canopies for a few wedding seasons, and I’m pleased to be able to offer the option now for the first time with a collection of three designs. You can find more details about each of them in the SewJewish Etsy shop.

Cut & Sew Your Own Chuppah Canopy

The designs can be adapted to create canopies with finished sizes from  5.5’ to a little over 6’, depending on how large you cut the canopy piece and the technique you used to finish the edges.

The project does call for an experienced sewist who can choose the techniques for finishing the canopy edges and also adding ties to attach the canopy to the chuppah frame or poles.

For example, the “I Am My Beloved’s…” canopy and the “We Will Build this World with Love” canopy both have a 76” printed square around the central design. If you cut out the canopy along this square and finish the edges with a 1” double fold hem, you’ll create a 6’ x 6’ canopy. This hemming technique works well for adding grommets to the corners for attaching the ties. If you cut the canopy a little larger or smaller, or use a different technique for finishing the edges, you’ll create a canopy of a different size.

Similarly, the border around the Song of Songs fruits design serves as a guideline for marking the cutting line with your desired dimensions.

You’ll find more details about each of these cut and sew canopy fabrics in the SewJewish Etsy shop.
